Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act

Main content start

Congress passed the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) establishing a national and uniform standard to protect workers from genetic discrimination.

In addition to prohibitions on discrimination in employment practices, GINA prohibits group health insurers and group health plans from adjusting premiums or contributions based on genetic information. Also, GINA amended the HIPAA privacy rules to include genetic information in the definition of protected health information.
