What is one fun fact about you?
I started working at Stanford as a temp in the Facilities Project Management office!
What is one thing that you like about working at Stanford?
The people! I have been so fortunate to develop deep relationships with many exceptional individuals over my time here. Many have become good friends - life-long friends, really. I don’t think many people can say that about the place they work.
Tell us briefly about an event, project, program or initiative you were involved with at Stanford that you're most proud of.
Over a 40-year career, there have been many points of pride. The renovation of Encina Hall in the late 1990s - bringing it back to its original beauty - is one. Helping to grow the School of Earth Sciences into a vibrant school that has become a fundamental component of the Doerr School of Sustainability is another. And maybe most importantly, I am very proud of the many excellent staff I have hired and mentored over the years. Many have grown impressive careers at Stanford and many have gone on to do amazing things elsewhere.
What is one of your favorite memories while working at Stanford?
I remember being one of the lucky “lottery winners” who got to welcome and shake hands with Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev in the Quad back in June of 1989. That was a thrill. Another favorite memory - having my kids come to my office at the end of their days at Stanford’s All Sports summer camp.
Leave your Legacy: What piece of guidance would you give a new hire at Stanford?
Be patient with yourself as it takes time to figure this place out! Three years at a minimum. And keep a sense of humor - ALWAYS!
