What is one thing that you like about working at Stanford?
The people! What a treasure trove! Caring, intelligent, thoughtful, skilled, problem-resolving, creative, talented, resilient, generous people. Over the years, any time that I have reached out to anyone at the University, I am reminded of what an amazing group of people are assembled here at Stanford.
What is one of your favorite memories while working at Stanford?
During my first year at Stanford, then President Gerhard Casper happened to be standing in the Quad, inspecting some damaged pavers. Being a cocky, self-assured youngster, I walked straight up to him and introduced myself. Fast forward some 20 years, we met again at a book event in the Bender Room in Green Library. My approach was much more deferential this time. He remembered me! I was thrilled!
Leave your Legacy: What piece of guidance would you give a new hire at Stanford?
Get involved in at least one event (or program or group) that is outside of your department (or unit or chain of command). It is a wonderful opportunity to meet colleagues from across the university, to experience a broader sense of esprit de corps, and to better understand how all the components of the university fit and work together.
