A hot topic in the personal health area is the microbiome. Tests are advertised, some even requiring a poop sample. Claims are made. Prebiotic and probiotic products are being developed and sold. Where is the science behind all of this?

Some of that science is coming from our Stanford campus. Professors Justin Sonnenburg and Christopher Gardner recently published the findings of their study on the effects of adding FErmented or FIber-rich FOods (Fe-Fi-Fo) on the gut microbiome and on levels of inflammation in healthy human volunteers. The study was published in the summer of 2021 in the science journal Cell. This is just one of a half dozen studies these researchers have conducted and that are ongoing.

Join us to get the latest research straight from the Stanford Prevention Research Center. Professor Gardner will present a webinar on this topic with an engaging blend of science and humor. In addition to helping to clarify terms such as the microbiome, prebiotics, and probiotics, he will offer practical, science-based advice on ways that you might want to consider modifying your eating habits to optimize your microbiome and your health.

Instructor: Christopher Gardner, PhD, is a nutrition scientist and the Rehnborg Farquhar Professor of Medicine at Stanford. For 25 years, he has been studying what to choose to consume and to avoid for optimal health and how best to motivate individuals to achieve those healthy dietary behaviors.
