Acquire new professional skills and knowledge this fall

Lifelong Learning Illustration

Fall is often experienced as a time of renewal, especially as the excitement of the start of school is felt. You may also have renewed energy to rack up accomplishments before winter sets in. In discussions with your manager, you may want to chat about development opportunities; there may be specific development options in your school or unit to support your professional development goals. On an ongoing basis, you have many courses, programs, and workshops to choose from, and this fall includes new options.

Campus learning options abound

Each quarter, university groups and departments offer courses, workshops, and programs on hundreds of topics. You can dive into learning about financial systems, amp up your technical skills, get a certificate in project management or research administration, and increase your overall effectiveness and interpersonal skills in the workplace. View a list of some of the fantastic training providers on campus.

Two of the professional development courses this fall being offered by University HR are below; these and other courses are STAP fund eligible (see details about STAP below):

  • “Thrive at Work,” a two-part course, emphasizes practical approaches to help you find your passion at work and mitigate the changes and ambiguities that may be present in the workplace. Enroll using STARS today to reserve your space!
  • “Crucial Conversations,” back by popular demand, this three-session course is aimed at helping you identify how to adopt a partnership approach that is empathetic and preserves the relationship when tough topics need to be discussed. Offered in October and December. Enroll using STARS today to get a spot!

University funds to support your professional development

We encourage you to use your Staff Training Assistance Program (STAP) funds for courses with a fee.

  • Each Sept. 1, your professional development funds are available for on- or off-campus professional development ($800 each fiscal year). Check your STAP balance at any time in the Axess portal.
  • Benefits-eligible staff have STAP immediately upon hire.
    • A companion program for eligible staff who are enrolled in an academic degree program is available after one year of service, called the Staff Tuition Reimbursement Program (STRP).
  • Learn more about these training and tuition programs on the Cardinal at Work website.
