Dental care goes virtual

Stanford’s dental plan has partnered with an app called Toothpic to help connect you with a licensed dentist for in-home dental advice.

Dental health is an important part of your overall health, and one you may overlook when scheduling in-office care is difficult. If you’re experiencing a specific dental issue and you think a virtual assessment can help, Delta Dental wants to help.

Delta Dental, which administers the plans for Stanford’s employees and retirees, is working with the Toothpic app to connect you with a licensed dentist for in-home dental advice through your smartphone. Downloading the app and opening a case is free to Delta Dental members.

How the Toothpic app works

When you open a case through the app, you’ll need to answer a few short questions about your dental health and your current issue or concern. The app will guide you through taking photos of your mouth with your smartphone, with clear instructions before and after each photo.

A licensed, independent dentist will issue a personalized direct care report within 24 hours, with photo markups that highlight potential issues, followed by a treatment recommendation and information for finding a Delta Dental network dentist should you need in-office care.

Register

Toothpic is a HIPAA-compliant platform. To access the app:

1. Register through Stanford’s Toothpic site (https://deltadental.toothpic.com/stanford) to create an account and enter the e-mail address to which you want your direct care report sent.

2. Scan the QR code with your smartphone camera to download the app.

3. Open the app and log into your account.
