Critical illness insurance through MetLife

An unexpected medical event could be costly for your family, even when you have medical insurance. Your medical plan will cover expenses like physician fees, surgery or hospitalization, but how would you pay for living expenses, especially if you are unable to work for a while?

Stanford is partnering with MetLife to offer critical illness insurance to benefits-eligible faculty and staff, which provides a lump-sum payment in the event that you or your covered family member is diagnosed with a medical condition that is covered by the critical illness plan. You pay the premiums with after-tax dollars through a payroll deduction.

How it works

When you enroll, you select one of three available coverage options: $10,000, $20,000 or $30,000, and select who you want to cover. Following a diagnosis, you would receive a lump-sum payment based on your coverage amount, and it is yours to use however you need. This insurance can pay for medical expenses such as deductibles, co-pays and out-of-network treatments, as well as everyday living expenses such as mortgage/rent payments, groceries, car payments, child care and more. The total lifetime benefit you can receive is three times the coverage option amount you elected for each covered person (i.e. if you and your spouse are both covered at $20,000, you can each receive up to $60,000 if you are diagnosed with covered conditions).

You and your family members are guaranteed coverage without a medical exam, so long as you are actively at work. More than 20 critical illnesses are covered through this plan, including heart attack, cancer, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and more.

Legal services through MetLaw

Whether you are buying a home or preparing a will or trust, or you encounter an unexpected problem like a speeding ticket, you may find yourself needing a lawyer.

Stanford is partnering with MetLaw to offer benefits-eligible faculty and staff access to comprehensive legal services at an affordable cost through the Hyatt Legal Plan. There are no co-pays or deductibles, you simply pay your premiums with after-tax dollars through payroll deductions and you can receive unlimited legal access by phone or in-person.

How it works

Once you have enrolled in the plan, you simply select a network attorney in the specialized area of practice that you need, either online or by phone. Your spouse or domestic partner and dependent children are also covered under the plan. There is no limit during the year to how many times you can use the services of a network attorney for covered legal matters. If you need help finding an attorney, the MetLaw Client Service Center can assist you.
