We're Enhancing Employee Communications Based on Your Feedback

In University Human Resources (UHR), we take your feedback seriously. More than 700 employees responded to an employee communications survey last fall, telling us their preferences in communication styles, channels, and frequency. Subsequent to the survey, we held four focus groups to glean even greater insights.

Communication Preferences Survey Results, Fall 2014

Based on a four-point scale, employees' top communications preferences were:

  • Email announcement (3.65)
  • The Stanford Report (2.86)
  • The Stanford Employee Insider (2.67)

The least preferred method of communication for employee-related information were:

  • Direct mail (2.11)
  • Text message (1.87)
  • Social media (1.84)

Summary of feedback on employee communication preferences

  • You prefer email communications over direct mail
  • You want to receive more frequent and timely communications
  • You want to receive information that is direct and brief, linking to the website for more details
  • You want an employee website that is easy to navigate and find information

New website and increased employee communications

We listened carefully, and as a result, we are shifting several areas of our communications strategy to give you more of what you want.

  • New website for employees: In February, we launched Cardinal at Work. In development since fall 2013, phase one of the site provides information on employee programs and services and offers a preview of the full site, which is set to launch in late summer 2015. The full site will serve as a single online destination for accessing employee-related information, resources and rewards.
  • Redesigned the Cardinal at Work Insider e-newsletter: The three year-old e-newsletter sent to benefits-eligible employees will increase from quarterly to monthly, providing more frequent updates and information on UHR's programs, services and events. To ensure you don’t miss the monthly update, keep an eye out for the email sent from Stanford University Human Resources and add to your address book.
  • Increased coverage in The Stanford Report: UHR Communications is closely partnering with University Communications to increase the frequency of employee-related announcements and features that affect the broad and diverse workforce into the daily publication.
  • Increased networking and social connections: To increase opportunities for you to connect with colleagues across the university, we will continue to work with campus partners to promote existing and new employee events. Planning is underway to facilitate events to build employee connections, including the second annual Cardinal at Work Celebrating Staff Careers event in partnership with the Multicultural SpringFest scheduled for May 21. The lunchtime event to be held at Frost Amphitheatre offers music and food, and includes a ceremony honoring long-serving employees celebrating 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 years of service.
