Labor Relations & Collective Bargaining at Stanford is a partnership with two labor unions that represent more than 1,200 staff employees.
Stanford University is proud of the collaborative working relationship with its two labor unions: SEIU Higher Education Workers Local 2007 and the Stanford Deputy Sheriffs’ Association (SDSA).
SEIU Higher Education Workers Local 2007
The bargaining unit was established in the early 1970s as United Stanford Workers, which later became affiliated with SEIU. Stanford University and SEIU Higher Education Workers Local 2007 have a collective bargaining agreement effective September 1, 2019 - August 31, 2024. The classifications represented by this collective bargaining agreement may be found in Appendix A of the agreement.

Stanford Deputy Sheriffs’ Association
The Stanford Deputy Sheriffs’ Association (SDSA) represents Deputy Sheriff Officers and Community Service Officers at Stanford. The university and the SDSA have a collective bargaining agreement effective October 16, 2022 - July 31, 2026.

How do I know if my position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement?
Collective bargaining agreements specifically indicate which positions are covered. Typically this information is also included in an employee’s offer letter. If you have questions about whether your position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement, refer to the contract, contact your immediate supervisor, or speak with your area's Human Resources representative.
How are union dues or service fees established?
These fees are established by the unions. Stanford University does not establish these fees.
What does collective bargaining require of the union and the University?
The University and the unions are required to meet and negotiate in good faith over wages, hours and other terms and conditions of employment covered by the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
Who do I see if I have questions about the union?
Each union has elected officers and stewards. Any questions specific to the union may be directed to the officers and stewards.
What laws apply to the collective bargaining process and unions?
The National Labor Relations Act is the primary legislation that governs the collective bargaining process. The National Labor Relations Board is responsible for enforcement of the Act.
