Sequoia: The story behind the name

There’s meaning behind the name – learn how the name Sequoia reflects the strength and future focus of Stanford’s new HR and Payroll system.

In April, we shared that Stanford’s new HR and Payroll system will be called Sequoia. But what’s behind the name?

Just like the towering Sequoia trees – resilient, rooted, and uniquely Californian – this new system will serve as a strong foundation for how we manage workplace tasks at Stanford. Sequoia represents stability, growth, and endurance, qualities that mirror the future we're building with this new platform. Grounded in advanced, cloud-based technology, Sequoia will help simplify everyday tasks and enhance the way we support each other across the university.

A community-driven name

The name Sequoia was selected through a naming contest held with the Stanford HR community, the group that will work most closely with our new system. More than 200 creative entries were submitted, and after narrowing the list to six finalists, the HR community voted to select the winner.

The winning name was submitted by Matt Nazario-Miller, who shared that Sequoias felt like a natural fit: “They’re distinctly Californian and reflect both the strength and uniqueness of Stanford.”

Looking ahead

Sequoia will launch in 2026, and as we get closer, we’ll share more about what’s changing and how you can prepare, including training. We’re excited to keep moving forward with a system built to grow with us, and for us.
