Small steps for a stronger heart and body

February is American Heart Month, a reminder that caring for your heart is essential to overall health and well-being. Learn how your Stanford benefits can help you put your health

In a busy world, it's easy to forget the importance of taking a moment for yourself. Caring for your heart and body is more than just a way to feel better physically — it’s a gentle reminder to slow down, reconnect with your inner strength, and nurture your well-being. When you make your health a priority, you're creating a solid foundation that helps you navigate life’s challenges with greater ease.

In February, we recognize American Heart Month, a reminder that caring for your heart is essential to overall health and well-being. One of the best ways to care for your heart and the rest of your body is through small, meaningful steps. By taking charge of your health, you can proactively address potential issues, avoid unnecessary discomfort and financial burdens, and better manage existing health issues. Building healthier habits can lead to positive outcomes over time, and Stanford provides resources and programs that help you make your health a top priority.

Three steps you can take this month to put your health first this year

1.Choose a primary care physician (PCP).

Having a primary care physician (PCP) you trust is key to managing your long-term health. A PCP is more than just a doctor — they’re your partner in health who can help you navigate everything from routine checkups to unexpected health concerns. Your PCP gets to know your medical history, helps you identify health goals, flags any risks before they become bigger problems, and provides personalized care as you age.

If you don’t have a PCP, now is the perfect time to choose one. Log in to your medical plan portal to search for providers near you. You can filter by gender, location, or other preferences to find someone who aligns with your health goals and offers care that fits your needs. Be sure to read reviews or ask for recommendations from friends or family before choosing a provider. Once you find a PCP, schedule an appointment to see if the provider is a good fit for you.

Taking the time to choose the right provider can give you peace of mind and confidence that your health is in good hands.

2. Schedule preventive health care appointments.

Keeping your health on track starts with getting your annual checkups, screenings, and vaccinations. These screenings and appointments often catch potential issues early and allow you and your doctor to monitor chronic conditions. They are essential to avoiding serious illnesses in the future and can help relieve stress about any health-related concerns. You can also use these appointments to talk to your provider about your mental and emotional well-being.

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of your preventive care:

  • Know your recommended health screenings: Health needs vary based on your age, gender, and health history. Talk to your provider about these screenings and ask about any additional recommendations. You can see a list of screenings by age on Cardinal at Work.
  • Take advantage of your benefits: Stanford’s medical plans fully cover in-network preventive care, such as annual physicals, heart health screenings, and vaccinations, at no cost to you.
  • Schedule your preventive care appointments early in the year: These appointments often fill up quickly, and it may take a few months to get an appointment. Schedule your annual physical, dental cleaning, eye exam, and any other important screenings today to stay on top of your health.
  • Think ahead: Set yourself up for future success by setting a calendar appointment reminder. After you go to your appointments, schedule next year’s visit before you leave your provider’s office.

Make 2025 the year of self-care

Living a healthy, balanced life starts with self-care. Simple daily practices—like exercising, meditating, or getting enough sleep—can have a big impact on heart health and overall well-being. Even in the midst of a busy schedule, it’s essential (and not at all selfish) to prioritize yourself.

Use these tips to intentionally incorporate self-care into your daily routine:

  • Schedule time each day for activities that relax and recharge you. Even if it’s just for 15 minutes, do something you enjoy.
  • Invite friends, family, and colleagues to practice self-care. Participating in group activities, such as walking, taking an art class, or cooking a healthy meal together, is a fun way to prioritize self-care.
  • Expand your knowledge. Register for these Healthy Living classes to support your self-care and well-being — and earn points in the BeWell program:
    • How to Flourish (Feb. 4) — Learn practical ways to reflect, identify what you want, and implement your goals so you can start living the personal and professional life you want.
    • Eat Well for Life (Feb. 24 ) — Gain tools to support healthy aging, improve your diet, and feel your best at any age.
