Employee & Labor Relations

Main content start

Employee & Labor Relations in University Human Resources promotes a fair, respectful, and high-performance culture across Stanford by providing guidance on and managing complex employment issues.

Employee Relations

The UHR – Employee & Labor Relations team is a resource when it comes to navigating workplace challenges. Here's how we can help:

  • Workplace Concerns: We serve as a central resource for staff workplace concerns, including discrimination and harassment.  Please see Reporting Workplace Concerns for more information.
  • Workplace Violence: We are responsible for the university’s Workplace Violence Prevention policy, including receiving reports of any acts or threats of violence, tracking reports, and managing the annual training requirement for employees. Information can be found on the Workplace Violence Prevention website.
  • Staff Investigations: We oversee workplace investigations involving staff, including concerns of discrimination, harassment, retaliation, and workplace violence. For information about the workplace investigations process, please see Information About Participating in a Staff Workplace Investigation.
  • Support for Managers and Local HR: We work directly with managers and local Human Resources offices to navigate and resolve issues related to employee performance, conduct, workplace accommodations, and other issues.
  • HR Policies: We maintain, develop, interpret, and answer questions about HR policies and procedures.
  • Protection of Minors: To ensure the safety of minors involved in Stanford programs, we oversee the Protection of Minors policy and mandated reporter processes. We also provide free Live Scan fingerprinting events on campus for staff.
  • Training: We offer trainings for managers on important employee relations and labor relations topics. Managers are encouraged to attend our employee relations trainings designed for managers.
  • Other Responsibilities: To promote consistency and fairness across the university, we also oversee background check adjudications, staff grievances, and involuntary terminations and layoffs.

Labor Relations

UHR – Employee & Labor Relations is also responsible for negotiating, interpreting, and administering the university’s collective bargaining agreements with SEIU Higher Education Workers Local 2007, Stanford Deputy Sheriffs’ Association, and UE Local 1043, Stanford Graduate Workers Union.
