Stanford Leadership Academy

Building the leadership capabilities of the faculty, staff and health care administrators who guide the university now and in the future.


Twenty participants are selected to attend the Leadership Academy each year. These individuals are believed to have the potential to assume broader leadership roles, and will enhance the diversity of university leadership.

Selection & Eligibility

Participants are traditionally nominated by the most senior leader within their school or unit in partnership with their local human resources representative, and approved by the president and provost.

Nominees should hold senior level positions at the dean, vice president or vice provost level, or report to someone at that level.

Faculty nominees should also be members of the Academic Council who show promise of becoming not only distinguished scholars, but also academic statespersons interested in contributing to the wellbeing of the university.


Stanford Leadership Academy meets for seven full-day workshops and four presentation dinners. The workshops are facilitated by Robert Joss, the Philip H. Knight Professor and Dean Emeritus of the Stanford Graduate School of Business, along with Patricia Gumport, Professor of Education and Sarah Soule, Morgridge Professor in the Graduate School of Business, Senior Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. The program is overseen by the Talent Management and Workforce Strategy team within University Human Resources.

Stanford Faculty are invited to each workshop to lead presentations on topics that include:

  • Financial Structure at Universities
  • Leadership of Academic Organizations
  • Culture as a Competitive (Dis)Advantage
  • Managing Crisis in an Organizational Institution
  • Negotiation and Team Performance
  • Strategic Thinking
  • Building Diverse Teams
  • Leading Change

In addition, senior Stanford leaders are invited to speak with the group at each session.

Outside of the workshops participants receive 360-degree feedback, executive coaching to create a development plan, the option to work with a professional communication coach, and attend dinners that serve as additional networking opportunities to provide peer consultation regarding current leadership challenges facing the participants.
