Enroll in new, free Managing Bias in Hiring workshop to mitigate discrimination

This 90-minute virtual workshop is designed for everyone involved in the staff hiring process, including hiring managers and interview team members.

In this new workshop, Managing Bias in Hiring, you will gain practical experience in identifying and mitigating biases that can surface in the staff selection and hiring process. This no-cost, 90-minute virtual workshop is designed for everyone involved in the staff hiring process, including hiring managers and interview team members. This workshop was developed as part of the Inclusive Talent Acquisition program and will be offered monthly, starting with the June 27 session. There will also be two sessions in July.

The interactive workshop will be facilitated by Kim Nugent, Director of Talent Management and Organization Development in University Human Resources, and will include small group activities that provide you the opportunity to practice identifying bias, how it manifests, strategies for mitigation and management, case studies, and actionable takeaways.

“Unconsciously favoring candidates who share similar backgrounds, interests, or experiences, can lead us inadvertently to prefer candidates who are presumed to be a “good fit” within the culture or who resemble us as interviewers,” Kim says. “This implicit bias can possibly lead us to exclude diverse candidates. Learning to be aware and take action to identify bias and re-pattern our thinking is critical.”

This workshop will provide you the tools and resources to recognize these types of biases and others, whether explicit or implicit, create a space for honest conversations amongst hiring managers and interview team members, and ultimately aims to overcome bias and enhance inclusion at Stanford.
